We are indebted to the Reformation for the recovery of the truth of salvation through faith alone and not works. Truly, the Reformation was a glorious light after the darkness of the ages that preceded it. Nevertheless, much teaching remained clouded by the prejudices of former thinking. It remained until the 1800's before the truth of justification was brought into the full light of Scripture. Nevertheless, even today, the most common teaching concerning justification is called the "Imputed Righteousness of Christ." Unfortunately, it confounds God's righteousness with righteous conduct in man, and the law becomes the measure of Christ's righteousness. In the Pauline doctrine of justification, I now stand before God in Christ, in all the blessedness of that position knowing that my sins have been forgiven, my guilt has been put away, and I have been judicially cleared from all the consequences connected with my former life; I am "justified in Christ" (Gal. 2:17 JND). The life I once had is altogether done with at the cross.

“Him [the Lord Jesus], being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain” (Acts 2:23).

Here in today’s verse we find God’s side of the cross, and man’s side. From man’s side, man is guilty of the murder of God’s beloved Son, for as our verse says, they took Him by wicked hands and demanded that He be crucified. Instead of welcoming the Lord Jesus as their Messiah, the nation of Israel rejected Him.

However, from God’s side all this was necessary in order for you and me to be saved. For this reason our verse tells us that all this was by the counsel and foreknowledge of God. It was necessary for the Lord Jesus to go to the cross and suffer for sin, not only for us, but also for the glory of God. This does not lessen the guilt of man in crucifying Him, but it shows that God’s plan of redemption was already there. It was not a “second thought” with God when the Lord Jesus was rejected.

Growing in Grace
“But all things that are reproved are made manifest by the light: for whatsoever doth make manifest is light” (Ephesians 5:13).
“The entrance of Thy words giveth light” (Psalm 119:130).
We all understand what light is, and because of the discovery of electricity, we have become accustomed to good light in our homes, in school, and where we work. However, we also understand what happens when we have poor lighting. If we do not have enough light, we may be able to see enough to be able to walk about without bumping into things, but perhaps it is not enough light by which to read, or do some fine work. Some people with certain jobs need extra special light, such as surgeons who do complicated operations, or men who operate specialized machinery.
God’s Word does not provide that kind of light, but morally it is the light of this world. The Bible exposes our hearts and shows clearly how wicked our natural hearts are. When He was here, the Lord Jesus was the light of this world, and that is why men hated Him. He was loving and kind, and did many miracles, which everyone liked. They liked it when He healed sick people, fed hungry people, and preached gracious words to them. But when He told them that that they were lost sinners and needed a Savior, they did not want to hear that. They hated Him so much that they crucified Him, for they hoped then that they would not have to be reminded of their sin.
But God has left us His Word, and it also is light, as we have seen. That is why men often do not want the Bible. They do not mind if it teaches them good moral principles, but do not like it when it shows them that they are sinners.
But how wonderful it is when we receive the Word of God! Then we find, as our second verse teaches us, that God’s Word gives light. It does not only show us what we are, but it shows us what God is. Then when we hear the gospel and accept Christ as our Savior, we are delivered from the “power of darkness,” and “translated into the kingdom of His dear Son” (Colossians 1:13). It is a wonderful thing to be in the light of God’s presence!

Behold the Lamb of God. (John 1:29)
It is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins. Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me: in burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin thou hast had no pleasure. Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of me,) to do thy will, O God.1 – He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.2
Ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, … but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot: … manifest in these last times for you, who by him do believe in God, … that your faith and hope might be in God.3
Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honor, and glory, and blessing.4

Comfort of the Scriptures
“Redeeming the time, because the days are evil” (Eph. 5:16).
We live in momentous days, “the last days,” when, as Scripture predicts, “perilous times shall come,” days when we see “men’s hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth.” Therefore, “because the days are evil” and because “evil men and seducers ... wax worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived,” we who know the Lord are to be “redeeming the time,” that is, “buying up the opportunities.” Day by day, God gives us such opportunities and tells us that “as we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.” There are times of which it may be said that “ye were also careful, but ye lacked opportunity.” But how much more often is it true that we let opportunities slip away, without redeeming them. God in grace may give other opportunities, but the lost ones can never be recovered. May we be diligent to be “always in remembrance of these things,” that we may “know how to speak a word in season to him that is weary,” and “to warn the wicked from his way,” “to walk in wisdom toward them that are without, redeeming the time.” “Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.”
A word of warning, a word of cheer,
As we walk life’s pathway each day,
A word from the Word, with God’s own power,
That will encourage and show the way.
